THE ALMOST-END-OF-WINTER LEG STRETCHER
THE ALMOST-END-OF-WINTER LEG STRETCHER
Date: March 6, 2010
Time: 10:30am (ride briefing at 10:15)
Location: Oakland Cafe
Leader: Larry L ("oldman")
Route: 12.5 mile "Firecracker 50" loop
Distance: As many 12.5 mile laps as you like
Speed: Nice and easy
Terrain: Mix of flats and mild rollers
Remarks:
So you say you've been sitting on the couch all winter, maybe putting on a few extra pounds, and you're not sure you remember what your bicycle looks like? If that's your story, you can start getting loosened up for the spring riding season by joining Larry L (aka "oldman") this Saturday for a pleasant little ride around the Oakland area in Lauderdale County.
The route will be the same 12.5 loop used for the Firecracker 50 each July. The pace will be easy enough that anyone can hang with the pack; but if you do get separated, you can't get lost because the route is fully marked (follow the RED arrows). The total distance is up to each rider: do as few or as many laps as you wish.
If you're planning to participate, please post a reply to this thread so Larry will know you're coming.
Starting time may be altered due to weather; please monitor the club web site.
All SCC members and interested guests are encouraged to participate!

SCC TUESDAY GROUP RIDE - weather permitting
SCC TUESDAY NIGHT GROUP RIDE
Location: Thacker Caskets, Florence Industrial Park
Time: 5:30pm
The regular Tuesday evening group ride will begin at Thacker Casket Co. in the Florence Industrial Park (see directions, below). The route will be the usual one -- out to the Jacksonburg area for laps around the Llama Lloop -- and then back to Thacker.
For 2010, Shoals Cycling Club is tailoring its Tuesday night ride series for the beginning and intermediate cyclists in our area. The Llama Lloop measures 3.2 miles around, and the terrain is almost completely flat. It's virtually impossible to get lost. Each rider can do as many laps as he or she wishes, at whatever speed is comfortable. These Tuesday night rides generally have a big turnout of riders of every ability level. So no matter what kind of bike you have, no matter how fast or slow or far you can ride ... you are most welcome to join us!
DIRECTIONS TO THACKER CASKET CO.: From Cox Creek Parkway, take Helton Drive northbound to the first light. Turn right on Lane St. Go to the intersection and turn right on Parkway Dr. Follow this around until it intersects with Rushton St. Thacker Casket is directly across the street.

SCC GROUP RIDE
SCC GROUP RIDE
Date: March 27, 2010
Time: 10:00am (ride briefing at 9:45)
Location: Underwood-Petersville Community Center
Leader: LarryG
Route: A new loop; see Remarks
Distance: 46 miles
Speed: 14-16mph avg
Terrain: Mix of flats and mild rollers
Remarks:
Our Saturday ride for this week will follow a new loop I've mapped out for us to try. Beginning at the U-P Community Center, the route heads north on CR7, wanders out through the Central and Oakland communities, then heads straight up CR81 for the return home via CR8 and CR7. Although this particular route has not been used for an SCC ride before, most of us have ridden virtually all of the roads involved, so there'll be no surprises. If the route works as well as I think it will, in future we can get a little variety by riding in the opposite direction.
The terrain is the usual mixture of Western Lauderdale County flats and rollers. We'll pedal up a few short, choppy hills scattered along the way, but there are no long or steep climbs anywhere on the route.
The pace will be fairly easy, with a target average of about 15mph unless there's a lot of wind to fight.
We'll make one brief stop at the Oakland Cafe, which is conveniently located at Mile 23 -- exactly halfway, regardless of which direction this new loop is ridden.
Please reply to this thread if you plan to ride. We will leave the community center promptly at 10:00 so we can be back to our cars not later than 2:00pm.
Starting time may be altered due to weather; please monitor the club web site.
All SCC members and interested guests are encouraged to participate!
